This quick article will show you a super easy way of checking your hard drive from the command prompt using S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology). What does this mean? It simply means that in less than a minute, you will be able to confirm that your hard drive is still functioning properly by viewing the hard drive's S.M.A.R.T. data. The following is for windows users.
Step #1: Open your command prompt by doing the following
- Start + R (hold the Windows Start button and press the "R" key)
- Type "cmd" and hit the Enter key
Step #2: Type the following commands (or copy & paste using the right click menu; as CTRL + V will NOT work in the command prompt)
- wmic (then press ENTER key)
- diskdrive get status (then press ENTER key)
If everything is good, you will see "Status OK" as depicted in my screen capture above. You can sleep easy knowing that your hard drive is healthy and not recording any errors. This is a good habit to get into and check on a monthly basis. I highly recommend you bookmark this page so that you can easily find it for next month!
If your Status returns anything other than OK, I highly recommend you clone your hard drive ASAP; or find someone who can help with that. One software that I was introduced to at work was Macrium Reflect Free Edition. It works quite well and best of all, it's FREE!
Post how your hard drive checked out!
